Okay, so everyone should have moved by now. I think I was probably the last one, considering I did not move until August 1 due to housing trauma. How is everyone doing? We had the usual expectation of residency sucking, hope for something better, and realization that we were crazy. We are in a family practice residency. David's first month he had between 2-3, 30+ hour shifts per week (he was doing the OB floor). This second month has been much better with him doing general surgery, but the next two months look like hell (sorry but it is true). We have had 3rd year residents tell us to get out while we can, and 2nd year residents say the third years are just crazy. We'll see. How about you all?

It was so fun to see everyone at graduation! It is still hard to believe it's all over. I am getting so sad because my house is almost empty from packing. We are moving Saturday. I hope everyone has a good move and good luck with residency!

Hey All,
This week is graduation, can you believe it??? I can't wait. I want to see everyone but mostly just want that diploma in Kylan's hands and have it be official!! I'm so happy this part of his schooling is over and we can get paid, come on, isn't that what we are all really looking forward to!!
I was curious what all of you were doing with your kidos during graduation? I know that little ones are not allowed at graduation (unless they are newborns) and I most of you have children that would fall into this category. Does SAA have something set up? I might know a girl who could help out if someone needs her. She is the daughter of our good friends in K-ville. Let me know.

Picnic in the 'Ville

Good news! SAA is sponsoring a playgroup picnic on Thur. MAY 15th at 11:00 at Brashear park. SAA was given a financial gift for helping with the peds lab this year so we can have most of the food provided. SAA will be providing 6 foot subs and drink and the local members will be bringing sides and desserts. If you would post either here or on the my family site if you are planning on coming and plan on bringing a bag of chips. This is going to be a great time to catch up, but we also want you to be able to mingle and share your info and ideas about the past 2 years with those who have yet to experience it. It should be a lot of fun. See ya there.

Here is one of my favorite pictures from our trip to Disneyland with the Labrums! We just got back tonight. We had such a fun week. This was taken the night we went to Goofy's Kitchen for dinner. It was tons of fun and we got to see a lot of characters, eat some great food and just relax. This was such a great week! The kiddos got along so well, the adults had a lot of laughs and we all got have some super yummy ice cream!! What a great way to celebrate graduation!

Shawn just finished his LAST rotations up in Idaho, and we are regrouping.

Monday we are heading out on a Cruise! Yeah!

With a tear in my eye (of happiness) we are leaving the kids home with family.

I am a bit hesitant about leaving my little Finley, that girl and I have not been separated for more than a day. (she'll get over me)

We are so excited. A real vacation. This isn't just going to St. Louis, or Columbia ladies. We are heading into the open sea's, and going south of the border.

I have heard that people gain aprx. 5-10 lbs on a cruise, so if I look a bit puffy at graduation, you can nod your head and know the food was FABULOUS!

A whole week...just imagine. Ahhhhh.

So, where is everyone else heading for a vacation reward; for crawling thru the depths of medical school and coming out better for it.?

Home sweet Home

Ahhh finally we are signing a contract for a home.

What a Pain in the butt.

I really didn't want to spend money going out to Minnesota, so I

searched the web for a great home. Impossible...almost.

The more I converse with others out side of Utah, the more I realize that

Utahan's are very modernized and with it.

I talked with one agency, and asked if I could just use a Credit Card,

and she informed me they don't take those things.

My thought..."ah crap, it's like K'ville. " Hence, when I asked for a picture of the home, they took this great view of the BACK. They did take one of the front, but a truck was in the middle of the picture.

My favorite of this home, is it has a gas fireplace downstairs, for those cold Minnesota days, nights... pretty much year round weather!

Anyhow, has everyone else had some good luck getting housing settled?

Our home isn't anything like that but it will do for Residency. I can practice being patient for 3 MORE years.

We had double reservations at the Depot Inn in La Plata and at the Holiday Inn in Kirksville. We have chosen the Holiday Inn and given 2 of the other rooms at Depot Inn away. I think I am about $50. bucked out. Who knew that there were so many hidden fees to graduate med. school. Surely the 300grand would cover everything.....Nope.
I think we should start a closet and rent out these gowns to the coming graduates. Who cares if it fits them or not, they can roll the sleeves and wear heels.

Greetings from Kirksville! As spring approaches we turn our minds toward graduation for the KCOM class of 2008. The Student Advocate Association (SAA) senior banquet committee is busy planning a terrific SAA Spouse/Significant Other Banquet, to be held on Thursday, May 15, 2007, at Il Spazio Restaurant. We are excited to announce the theme of the banquet this year, which is "Oh The Places You'll Go." This anticipated banquet provides a unique opportunity to honor all spouses or significant others of the graduating students. It is also a time to rekindle old friendships and perhaps create new ones. At the banquet, awards will also be given for SAA members who demonstrated significant leadership or service during their time at KCOM. This banquet is a very significant event and will be attended by many faculty and administration members. All spouses/significant others are invited to attend, along with their graduating students and any family or friends they may wish to invite. Four year members of the SAA will receive a complementary banquet ticket for themselves. Additional banquet tickets will be available for purchase at a cost of $15.00 each.

We will also be hosting a children's celebration this evening to honor the children of the graduating students. This event will be held at the school during the SAA Banquet. A light meal and snacks will be provided, as well as high quality child care and fun activities. This service will be provided at a cost of $2.00 per child for the evening.

I think we have decided to rent for the 3 years of GP residency. Especially if we are sticking around UT. Oh my heavens, we have all survived "another" year of med-school. Give yourself 3 cheers!
So, we have been busily booking our flights and it got me thinking of the Dr. Seuss book something about plane, trains and cars. I was wondering how everyone else is going to arrive back to K'ville. We are using flyer miles, ( I knew my credit card spending would pay off!) and we are astonished as to the regular prices for flying out approx. $400. bucks. If we had to pay out of pocket, Shawn would be the only person at his own graduation, or we would be driving, and we did this once, too many times when living in Mo.
Anyhow, just wondering how y'all are getting to graduation, and maybe some of us will be on the same flight.

Also, I hope everyone posts when they know where they are going and stuff. Won't some people know in December? Will passed his boards, YIPEE no more tests until residency! Also, we hope to be in Fresno,California at Children's Hospital next year, but won't know officially until March 17th, the MD match. Will just finished an out rotation there and loved it. Will loves Pediatrics and I am so glad he picked a short residency. Those long hours are rough on the fam. He is so glad to be back in Utah with his cushy schedule:) Hope everyone's interviewing is going well!

Okay, so I have been trying to think of some topic of conversation to get people posting on the site. Sadly though I must be boring because I have not come up with any good ideas yet. So... here is an attempt. I am thinking/planning on weaning Liam when he turns 1 (which will be in December). However I am not quite sure how to go about it for a couple of reasons. 1 - will I be able to put him straight onto milk, or do I give him formula first. 2 - I don't really want to start him on a bottle just to get him off of it. He drinks out of a cup some, but mostly I give him sippy cups without the "no spill" piece in it, so he doesn't really have to suck, but it won't spill everywhere. For those of you who have done this, did you just switch each feeding for a bottle/sippy. I'm open to all suggestions or thoughts.

The List...

Okay so graduation seems to be quickly approaching (hurray!), and I have found that after so many years of putting things off and saving money that I am starting to make a list. The "I want" list. Now, I know that I am probably going to have less money after we graduate then we do now, we are going to qualify for fewer government services since we will actually be making money, and that this list is ridiculous. However here is where it stands. Our 10th anniversary is the same month that David graduates, I would like to go on a fun trip. It would be great if we could buy a house the next time we move, especially with housing prices going down. David is going to need a new car, his current car was basically given a death sentence the last time we registered it (which is understandable considering it is almost 30 years old). I would like a new vacuum, one of those really powerful - but light weight ones, my current one keeps shorting out. Wouldn't it be great if we could get an new entertainment center, with doors so I did not have to worry about Liam breaking the DVD player. And a new TV would be cool, ours will be 10 in May also, I would love a flat screen.... And the list goes on. I know it is ridiculous, that 90% of it will never happen, but I frequently find myself adding to the list. (Big Sigh) Does anyone else have this problem?

Oh, and I want a Mac computer, I think they are cool, and I love those commercials. :)

Problems with Comments

Does anyone else have problems posting comments on blogs? If I click on the "comments" link or ask it to open in a new page, about 80% of the time the window will open, but nothing ever downloads. It just sits there as a blank page. I have been having some problems with my computer in general, and my ISP is not always very reliable. So, I am wondering if this is just one of those problems or if there is something I can do about this? Any suggestions? Also, for those of you with blogs, sorry for not making any comments, this would be why.

My race is finally over. I have to admit that I thought it was so much fun. It was far more enjoyable than I thought it was going to be. My legs are still paying for it but it was worth it.
Laci- good luck on your race and if I can give you any advice, it would be to stay hydrated, have something to eat(shot block, GU, smarties) that will give you some extra energy, and don't start out too fast. If you can, find a pacer who is running the time you are aiming for, and stay with them. You don't want to deplete all of your energy by starting too fast. You are going to do great and just enjoy it!

Hey Ladies,

I'm just checking in to see how all the residency prep is going. Kylan has received two invites for interviews and two more that have told him verbally that they will have him come interview. My theory is... when I see it in writing I will believe it. That is how I feel about a contract too. We just got a call two days ago letting Kylan know that Tulsa is not accepting any ENT applicants this year. I'm am so glad that in the end he planned on driving or we would be out a airplane ticket right now. I feel sorry for the other students that were planning on going there and DID buy tickets.
We are last minute trying to fill in those weeks Kylan was planning on being in Tulsa, who knows what he will decide to do. I'm getting ready to run my half marathon this weekend in Akron. I keep telling myself it will be fun but my gut tells me otherwise =)
Chantel, you are a crack up. I'm also loving everyone else's blogs. I'm happy to feel like I am somewhat in the "know", even when I'm really not!

I think this blog is such a great idea! Especially with graduation and residency ahead. It will be so fun to see what everyone is doing and where everyone is going. Things here in Utah are great. Will is loving how laid back and hands on rotations are for him. He has turned in his application for a pediatric residency. He has already received an interview to St. Joseph's in Phoenix and one in Albuquerque New Mexico. We are headed to Fresno Valley Children's Hospital in California for his one out rotation where he will interview there too. The boys and I are going to live with my parents for the month since they live an hour away. Fresno is his number one choice right now so hopefully he will get a feel for how he likes the program in October. He decided to only do the MD match since we would like to stay out west. There aren't any DO pediatric residencies out west, so that is why he decided to go the MD route. I hope everyone is doing well and enjoying the interview process!

It is definitely not as creative as most but it gets the job done. Kylan is finished with his personal essay and now we are just waiting for interviews. He has been accepted to one interview at Genyses where only 8 students even get an interview, so that is exciting. He will have an interview here in Massillon and more than likely 2 more in Michigan. I'm just glad that for the most part he doesn't have to fly and spend even more money getting to these interviews. How is it for you girls out west? He is still busy doing his ENT rotations and is already looking forward to the next break.
I'll be so glad when this year is over. I'm looking forward to my OWN house, stability for more than 2 years at a time, and an actual income, however small it is!
I'm back in school. I was a non traditional student 5 years ago so what does that make me now? Stupid, crazy, all the above!
Keion is playing football and select soccer, at the same time, I don't recommend doing this, and is doing well in school. He is in all the advanced classes and hates it. I wouldn't know what it's like because I was never in advanced class =)
I'm excited to go back and check out this blog when I get a minute. Jen, I'm going to have to get a hold of you, as I want to see the addition to your family!

I just wanted to tell you that Olivia is absolutely adorable! I can't believe how much she has grown.
About the residency, Benj is hoping to get an anesthesia spot either here in Kirksville or in St. Louis, but we will be applying all over the place, too. I wish we would just know, already. Oh well, Ben is just getting ready to send in his application, so I shouldn't get too impatient. He just found out that he passed step II of the boards, so that's good news. He will go to Philadelphia next month to take the other exam. Has anyone gone there yet? We need to get a hotel for him and were hoping to get one close to the testing site for him....any recommendations?

Well here's our most recent pic of Olivia. My new favorite Liv story is how she walks around the house yelling, 'YEA! YEA? YEA', because she is constantly calling for me, 'Mama, ma, mom?' And my response is always, 'Yea!' So I guess she thinks its like a greeting or something!!

Anyway, I would love to hear where you all are thinking about for residency. I know nothing is set in stone but we have an idea of a few places that we wouldnt mind moving....

It's so great to hear from you all! Kirksville is just not the same without all of you. Don't get me wrong, the people here are great, but we miss you guys tons!

There's not much new with us. I am still working in the chemistry department at Truman and Ben has decided to go into anesthesiology. He is hoping to get the residency spot here in the 'ville, so we will probably be here for awhile, yet.

Thanks for starting up this site, Chantel! It was a wonderful idea and I love it already!

A quick update: Jonathan's mind and heart are still in Dermatology. We hope to get into an internship program here (Oakwood Southshore) by our house and then get into residency there as well. (In Derm, the internship and residency aren't tied. So come match time, be ready to hear me & my tears out, as you will all know where you are going, be done with applications, brown-nosing, personal comments, blah blah blah, and we will have to do this all again next summer). :} We also get to spend our "vacation" time after graduation doing Derm rotations before residency interviews. So unfair. Oh well. It will be worth it, right?!

I have enjoyed some brief time "away" from beading but already put my floaties on, since the holiday season is coming quick! Chantel is THE best partner ever, and as you all know, superwoman. My girlies are fun and crazy and I think my mothering skills go down the tube daily. Caitlyn says the funniest things and I can't stop kissing Lauren. In a couple days, Caitlyn will be 3 1/2 and Lauren will be 16 months! I can't wait to hear and share more. Chantel, what don't you do? Can you come over? I am ready for a shower. I also have some kids for sale today. ;)

This is a fantastic idea. I have no idea who anyone is on the other site. It is so weird that we have only been away for a year. We are doing good here in Utah. David (like all others I am sure) loves some rotations and hates others. He has thought all along that he would go into Family Practice, however his last rotation of Neurology may have changed his mind. We will have to see.

Liam is growing like a weed. He is 8 1/2 months old and has been crawling, sitting up on his own, and standing for about a month now. The other day I found him holding onto a table and "jumping" up and down on one foot. He thought he was hilarious, and I must admit it was pretty funny. He loves to laugh and is constantly smiling, he is such a happy baby I can't believe how lucky I am.

We have been having a great summer being close to family. I managed to have my first successful garden (all of the ones I planted in Missouri withered up and died). I have a humongous zucchini and an even bigger pumpkin plant with a huge pumpkin growing (only one but better then none), then the standard tomatoes and a pepper. I have been able to tag along on three family trips to Lake Powell, which I have absolutely loved. David was able to coordinate it and make it for one of the trips also, which was great. Liam loves riding in the boat and is quite a water baby. I have attached a recent picture of him. Love and miss you all.

Yea! This is great to be able to touch base with all of you! I have gone on myfamily a bunch of times but I am too overwhelemed by the TONS of names that I dont know....

How is everyone? We are getting ready for Anthony to go to Doctors Hospital in Columbus for two weeks in September. This weekend he is heading up to Philly to take one of the tests that they have to do. He's taking the second test in August.

Olivia is doing great! She is 16 months and a ball of energy. Im going to try and post a pic of her here.

Jodie and Ashlie, I would love to see pics of your kiddos! (Chantal I look at your myspace page to get my fix of Morgan and Maxwell!

Hello from the Labrums! I am super excited to have a site just for class of 2008. Thanks everyone for participating! I will give a quick up date on the Labrum family.

Barrett: Still busy with rotations, loves what he is doing, and it going to go int pediatrics. We are leaning heavily to Kansas City, but we will have to see how it goes.

Chantel: I am busy like always, but I love it. My business has really taken off in the last little while (thanks in part to my wonderful business partner Ashile Richey!) so I guess it would be our business not just mine! fairy tale boutique is going to be picking up both our products! In the next few weeks, they should be up and running on their site. You can also check us out at kidcessories.com some of you may know our "super model" spokes person! In my "spare" time, I am a mom of 2 wild kids, and love it!

Morgan: is our DRAMA QUEEN! (shocking I know!) She is a sweet little girl and always has a smile and something funny to say. Here is her birthday pictures done by Christina Dixon.

Max: Is growing too fast, and it makes me sad! Last night he learned to stand on one foot, and thinks he is so smart. He is very lax and easy going, which is a good thing considering who his sister is! Here is his latest picture, and yes, I do have a "mom" crush on him!

I am excited for every one to be on the site and update us on what is going on! If you know of anyone who didn't get an email to be on the site, please let me know! :)
